VW ID. Cross 2027 revealed, the budget electric SUV that wants to become the new European bestseller

Volkswagen ID. Cross 2027, the pocket-sized electric SUV, with a modern design and a price starting at 28,000 euros

Volkswagen is taking a decisive step in the democratization of electric mobility and officially launches the new ID. Cross, a compact electric SUV that is announced as the spiritual, zero-emission successor to the popular T-Cross. Presented in its world premiere today, July 15, 2026, the new model promises to set new standards in the compact segment thanks to an extremely competitive starting price – under 28,000 euros on the European market –, a maximum autonomy of up to 427 kilometers and a technological suite taken directly from the premium classes.

Advance sales begin today in Germany, with the model gradually becoming available in all European markets, including Romania.

Robust design and smart proportions: "Pure Positive"

Built on the new modular MEB+ architecture, the new ID. Cross adopts the “Pure Positive” visual language. It emphasizes a friendly yet robust appearance with clean geometric details. The elongated line of the “flying roof” and the strongly profiled C-pillar give it a dynamic presence on the road.

In terms of dimensions, the SUV measures 4,153 mm long, 1,581 mm high and 1,794 mm wide, with a wheelbase of 2,601 mm. Although it retains its urban dimensions, the dedicated platform for electric vehicles frees up considerable interior space. The trunk has a generous capacity of 475 liters (20 liters more than the T-Cross), to which is added an additional 25-liter compartment under the hood (frunk), ideal for storing charging cables.

The higher trim levels (Style) receive intelligent IQ.LIGHT LED Matrix headlights, 3D LED taillights and light strips that connect the illuminated VW logos, both front and rear.

The new Innovision multimedia system and a touch of nostalgia

Inside, Volkswagen has listened to customer feedback and made major changes. The most important is the return to physical buttons on the steering wheel, abandoning the previously criticized touch surfaces.

The dashboard houses the new Innovision multimedia system, with a massive 12.9-inch (32.8 cm) central touchscreen that offers a fast and intuitive interface. In front of the driver is the 10.25-inch screen (Digital Cockpit Pro), which brings a nostalgic surprise: a retro function that allows the display of dashboard instruments directly inspired by the first generation Golf Mk1, but adapted to measure the flow of electrical energy (powermeter) instead of the engine speed.

Three power variants and two battery options

The ID. Cross will adapt to diverse mobility needs through three power levels and two different battery chemistries:

Engines: Customers can choose between 85 kW (116 hp), 99 kW (135 hp) and the top-of-the-line 155 kW (211 hp) version.

Batteries:

  • The 37 kWh (net) battery uses LFP (lithium iron phosphate) technology. It offers an estimated range of around 316 km and charges from 10% to 80% in just 23 minutes at DC stations up to 90 kW.
  • The 52 kWh (net) battery is based on NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) technology, providing a WLTP range of up to 427 km. Charging from 10% to 80% takes around 24 minutes, thanks to a constant charging curve of up to 105 kW DC.

The drive system is exclusively on the front axle, ensuring increased agility in urban environments. On the dynamics side, the top 155 kW version can be optionally equipped with the new DCC adaptive suspension.

Top-class technologies and top comfort

Volkswagen is putting the ID. Cross on the technology map with features never seen before in this price segment. The Connected Travel Assist system uses online data and, for the first time in its class, offers traffic light recognition, being able to stop the vehicle automatically at red lights. Drivers will also be able to use the One Pedal Driving function for efficient regenerative deceleration.

For tight maneuvers, the car offers the Area View 360° system and Park Assist Pro, which allows automatic parking controlled directly from your smartphone.

Long-distance comfort is ensured by soft, textile materials on the dashboard and premium optional features such as the 425 W Harman Kardon audio system with 10 speakers, the huge panoramic roof (74 x 90 cm) and the 12-way electrically adjustable front seats with pneumatic massage function (three distinct programs).

Another extremely useful detail is the standard 3.6 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function, which allows direct powering of various devices (e.g. charging e-bikes during excursions). The 52 kWh battery variant can also tow trailers of up to 1,200 kg.

Prices and availability in Romania: How much will the new electric SUV cost?

The commercial launch begins today in some European markets with the pre-configured Life and Style versions, equipped with the 155 kW (211 hp) engine and 52 kWh battery. In Germany, the price of these versions starts at 36,525 euros. The basic variant, the ID. Cross Trend (with 37 kWh battery and 116 hp), will later go into production with an extremely attractive price of 27,995 euros (almost 28,000 euros).

On the Romanian market, the official importer Porsche Romania is expected to open order books towards the end of summer or beginning of autumn this year, with the first physical deliveries estimated for the first part of 2027.

Taking into account European prices, we can estimate that in Romania the basic Trend variant will start at approximately 28,500 euros (VAT included). Considering the national Rabla Plus 2026 program for individuals, which offers an eco-ticket of 18,500 lei (approximately 3,700 euros) for the purchase of fully electric vehicles manufactured in the EU (the ID. Cross being assembled in Spain, at the Navarra plant), the final purchase price in Romania could drop spectacularly to the threshold of 24,800 euros.

The higher-end versions (Life and Style with the large battery) will most likely start at around 37,000 euros, reaching around 33,300 euros with Rabla Plus. With this excellent ratio between price, autonomy and usable space, the new electric SUV has every chance of quickly becoming a bestseller on the local market.
