Hyundai's electric offensive - production of the new Ioniq 3 has officially started at the Izmit plant

Hyundai has marked a historic moment for its European division by starting series production of the new 100% electric Ioniq 3 2027 model at its plant in Izmit, Turkey. The strategic investment of 250 million euros transforms the Turkish facility into a key technology hub, strengthening the production capacity of electric vehicles in the region.

The model, first presented to the public in April, is positioned as a central piece in the South Korean manufacturer's electrification strategy, with Europe as its main market.

A major investment in modernization

The decision to produce the Ioniq 3 in Izmit follows an extensive modernization program carried out over the past two years. The 250 million euros were directed towards the assembly lines and the adaptation of the infrastructure to cope with the complex requirements of the new electric platforms.

The Izmit plant, which opened in 1997, is one of Hyundai's largest production facilities outside of South Korea. This new investment adds to the total of over one billion euros the company has injected into the Turkish economy over the years. Initial production capacity for the new model is set at 30,000 units per year, with the possibility of expansion depending on demand in European markets.

"Aero Hatch" body and high efficiency

The Hyundai Ioniq 3 introduces an innovative body format defined as the “Aero Hatch”, designed to optimize aerodynamic efficiency and extend real-world driving range.

From a technical point of view, the model offers performance adapted to urban and extra-urban use:

  • Engine and power: The propulsion system delivers up to 147 horsepower.
  • Autonomy: Can cover a distance of up to 500 kilometers on a single charge, under optimal test cycle conditions.

Inside, the model relies on advanced digitalization, state-of-the-art connectivity and a generous interior space, specific to architectures dedicated exclusively to electric vehicles.

Availability and estimated prices in Romania

The commercial launch on major European markets is scheduled for autumn, with the first units set to arrive in showrooms in the coming period.

For the Romanian market, official prices have not yet been communicated by the importer, but estimates based on European positioning indicate the following ranges:

  • Basic version: Can start around 30,000 euros.
  • Higher equipment and extended range variants: They can go up to 36,000 - 38,000 euros, depending on the equipment packages chosen.

By applying potential government subsidies through the Rabla Plus program, the final purchase price for Romanian customers could become extremely competitive in the compact electric car segment.

Prospects for the Izmit plant

In addition to the production of the new Ioniq 3, Hyundai representatives confirmed that the Izmit plant will also host the assembly of new generations of the Bayon and i20 models in the near future, thus ensuring the continuity and modernization of production lines in Turkey.
