Bavarian Revolution in the Premium Segment. The New Generation BMW X5 2027 (G65) Has Debuted and Can Already Be Ordered in Romania
The German automaker has officially unveiled the fifth generation of its legendary SUV, the BMW X5 (chassis code G65). In a lightning-fast strategic move, the new model was presented yesterday, June 30, in an exclusive preview in Romania, and order books have already been opened for local customers.
With a starting price of 94,501 euros (VAT included), the new X5 brings not just a simple restyling, but a radical transformation of design and technology, borrowing defining elements from the upcoming Neue Klasse model family.
Exterior Design: “Neue Klasse” DNA and an X-Shaped Luminous Signature
Aesthetically, the new BMW X5 G65 marks a major visual departure from its predecessor. The front end adopts a much slimmer and more minimalist grille, flanked by striking headlamps that incorporate a double “X”-shaped light signature for the daytime running lights.
The main exterior innovations include:
- Winglet door handles: Integrated directly below the window line, these are sensor-type and require only a light touch to electrically open the doors.
- Goodbye, split-level tailgate: BMW has abandoned the traditional two-piece tailgate in favor of a single element with full vertical opening, optimizing aerodynamics (Cd coefficient of just 0.285).
- Increased dimensions: The SUV now measures 4,994 mm in length and has an extended wheelbase of 3,035 mm, offering considerably more generous interior space.
- Strict 5-seat configuration: To more clearly delineate the model from its bigger brother the X7, the new generation X5 definitively drops the 7-seat option.
The Interior of the Future: Passenger Display and Smart Windshield
Inside, the philosophy of reducing visual clutter reaches new heights. Classic standards have been completely rewritten: the famous iDrive rotary controller has disappeared, and the physical air vents have been replaced by digital controls via the central touchscreen.
- BMW Panoramic Vision: Instead of the traditional instrument panel, the driver receives a narrow strip of digital projection at the base of the windshield, across its entire width, complemented by a 3D Head-up Display system.
- Dedicated passenger screen: An absolute first for the X5 is the 14.6-inch screen for the right-hand passenger. It comes equipped with light-directing technology based on the driver's gaze: if the driver looks at the passenger screen, it automatically reduces its visibility to prevent distraction.
A Historic First: 5 Types of Propulsion on a Single Platform
Although it uses a highly evolved version of the flexible CLAR architecture, the new X5 becomes the first model in BMW's history to be available with five different types of engines: gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), electric (iX5) and, from 2028, hydrogen.
In Romania, the initial launch phase brings 5 engine versions, all equipped as standard with xDrive all-wheel drive and 8-speed ZF automatic transmission:
- X5 40d xDrive (Mild-Hybrid Diesel, 3.0L): 313 HP, 670 Nm — Price: €94,501
- X5 40 xDrive (Mild-Hybrid Petrol, 3.0L): 400 HP — Price: €97,889
- X5 50e xDrive (Plug-in Hybrid): Latest generation PHEV technology — Price: €100,551
- iX5 60 xDrive (100% Electric): Features a huge 141 kWh battery (net capacity), 800V architecture with record charging at 460 kW DC and a WLTP range of up to 845 km — Price: €100,551
- X5 M60e xDrive (High-Performance Plug-in Hybrid): Signed by the M division — Price: €122,089
What do we get in the standard equipment of 94,501 euros? The basic version (40d xDrive) comes extremely well equipped: 21-inch wheels, adaptive LED headlights, Veganza ecological upholstery, heated steering wheel, soft-close for doors, panoramic roof, adaptive suspension with electronic shock absorbers and the complete package of new generation displays.
How does the new BMW X5 stack up against its direct rivals?
Although the new X5 comes with an obvious addition of technology and a newly developed propulsion system, the price reflects this generational leap compared to competing models on the Romanian market (in their volume diesel versions):
| Model / Version | Power (HP) | Combined Consumption (l/100 km) | 0-100 km/h Acceleration (seconds) | List Price* (Euro, incl. VAT) |
| The New BMW X5 40d xDrive (Mild-Hybrid) | 313 | 7.1 | 6.1 | 94,501 |
| Audi Q7 3.0 TDI | 299 | N/A | N/A | 90,313 |
| Mercedes-Benz GLE 350d (3.0 Diesel) | 286 | N/A | N/A | 91,840 |
List prices do not include any seasonal campaigns or promotional offers from local dealers.
The new generation BMW X5 G65 promises to retain its crown as the bestseller in the premium SUV segment, and the first deliveries to customers who place orders during this period are scheduled to begin towards the end of this year for the thermal variants and early next year for the plug-in hybrid and electric models.
