Google Gemini AI arrives on Renault cars: When will it be available on Dacia models?

The AI revolution at the wheel: Renault replaces Google Assistant with Gemini. What's happening with Dacia?

The rigid conversations and strict voice commands you had to memorize to understand your car are about to become history. Renault has officially announced the integration of Google's Gemini generative artificial intelligence-based assistant into its in-car ecosystem.

The update is done remotely, Over-The-Air (OTA), and targets all vehicles in the French manufacturer's range equipped with the OpenR Link multimedia system (with integrated Google services). The package is completely free and has already begun to be distributed gradually, being offered as an optional upgrade (opt-in) for users who want to make the switch from the old Google Assistant.

What can Gemini AI do when equipping OpenR Link?

Unlike previous generations of voice assistants, which operated on fixed syntax and often made errors, Gemini brings deep contextual understanding. The AI is able to process the intentions behind words and carry on free, natural conversations.

The main advantages of native integration include:

  • Direct control over the car: The driver can adjust the climate control ("Hey Google, I'm cold" will automatically increase the temperature, without asking for a fixed number of degrees), change the audio volume, navigation or ambient settings. On certain models, such as the new Renault 4 E-Tech, Gemini can even open or close the panoramic sunroof.
  • Intelligent route planning: With direct access to the on-board computer, Gemini monitors hardware telemetry and battery range for electric models. The AI can recalculate the route in real time via Google Maps, suggesting optimized charging stops based on consumption and traffic.
  • Full synchronization: By being connected to the user's primary Google account, the assistant maintains the continuity of searches and preferences from home directly on the car's central screen.

In the first phase, the system recognizes 13 languages (including English, French, German, Spanish and Polish). Owners in Romania have little to wait: the Romanian language will be officially introduced in a future wave of updates, according to the brand's expansion strategy. Also in the future, the Gemini Live mode will be implemented, which will allow users to interrupt the assistant in mid-sentence or change the communication language on the fly, without repeating the activation command.

But what's happening with Dacia? When will AI arrive on domestic models?

For fans of the Mioveni brand, the answer has two distinct nuances: one related to native integration and one related to smartphone use.

From a hardware and native software point of view, European Dacia models (such as the new Duster 3, Sandero Stepway or the upcoming Bigster) will not receive this upgrade directly into the car's system in the near future. The reason lies in the digital architecture chosen by the manufacturers to keep prices affordable:

Feature Renault (OpenR Link) Dacia (Media Display / Media Nav Live)
Operating System Native Android Automotive OS (with Google built-in) Proprietary Linux-based system
Hardware Integration The AI runs directly on the car's processor, with access to the data bus (CAN bus). The car's system acts as a mirror for the smartphone (mirroring).
Vehicle Control Can adjust climate control, lights, sunroof, etc. Limited to multimedia and in-app navigation.

However, there is an interesting mention in the group's official press release: Gemini will be implemented on international models, including the "Renault Duster" version sold in India, which benefits from a different technological configuration.

The solution for Dacia drivers: Android Auto

Although Dacia cars do not have Google directly integrated into the dashboard brain, owners will have access to artificial intelligence indirectly. Google has confirmed that Gemini AI will be implemented in the coming months within the Android Auto platform.

This means that when you connect your phone (via cable or wireless) to the 10-inch screen on the Media Nav Live or Media Display, you will be able to interact with Gemini for messages, music playback, general knowledge questions or navigation via Google Maps. The main difference, however, remains: Gemini on Android Auto will not be able to give physical commands to the car, such as turning on the seat heating or checking the autonomy directly from the dashboard.
