Volkswagen ID.4 becomes ID.Tiguan: Everything you need to know about the new electric SUV

From Numbers to Soul: Volkswagen ID.4 Becomes ID.Tiguan

It seems that the "era of numbers" at Volkswagen is coming to an unexpected end. After a few years in which we have become accustomed to names like ID.3, ID.4 or ID.7, the Wolfsburg-based manufacturer is taking a step back towards tradition (or a step forward towards the hearts of customers). The Volkswagen ID.4 is to be renamed ID.Tiguan, marking a major change in strategy under the leadership of Thomas Schäfer.

Why this change?

The information, recently "leaked" by the IG Metall union during a conference at the Emden plant, confirms what many experts anticipated: numerical names are perceived as "cold" and lacking the emotional connection that names like Golf, Polo or Tiguan have built over decades.

  • New design: The facelift scheduled for this year will not be just a simple software update. The ID.Tiguan will adopt a look much closer to the combustion version, with sharper lines and a more robust presence.
  • Redesigned interior: Rumor has it that physical buttons on the steering wheel and superior materials will return, correcting criticisms of the first-generation ID.4.
  • Concentrated production: European production will gradually move from Zwickau exclusively to Emden, where it will continue until at least 2031.

The current Tiguan (Combustion/Hybrid) in Romania

While the ID.4 is preparing for rebranding, the "classic" Tiguan (the third generation, recently launched) remains a sales pillar in Romania. Romanians still love the versatility of the TDI and eTSI engines.

Prices and Configurations

Currently, on the local market, the new Volkswagen Tiguan has a starting price of approximately EUR 33,300 (VAT included) for the basic version (1.5 eTSI, 130 HP). Well-equipped versions, such as the R-Line with 2.0-liter diesel engines and 4Motion all-wheel drive, can exceed the EUR 50,000 threshold.

Competition in Romania

The "traditional" Tiguan is fighting a close battle in the compact SUV segment with:

  • Hyundai Tucson & Kia Sportage: Segment leaders in Romania, offering extended warranties and competitive prices.
  • Nissan Qashqai: Very popular for its e-Power hybrid system.
  • Renault Austral: A fresh rival with a digitalized interior that attracts the new generation of buyers.

The New ID.Tiguan: Price and Electric Competition

The launch of the new ID.Tiguan will reposition Volkswagen in the fight for electric supremacy. The strategy is clear: if you can't beat Tesla with a new name, try with a legend.

Price Estimates

Although official prices for the ID.Tiguan facelift have not yet been published for Romania, it is expected that they will reflect the current ID.4, but with a slight adjustment to remain competitive.

We can expect a starting price of around EUR 43,000 - 45,000, before the application of subsidies through the Rabla Plus program (if they are still available in the current format).

Electric Rivals

The ID.Tiguan's mission will not be easy, as it will have to face the "heavyweights" of the segment:

  1. Tesla Model Y: The best-selling global electric model, dominating with charging infrastructure and aggressive pricing.
  2. Skoda Enyaq: The platform "cousin", which is often preferred in Romania for its better-thought-out interior space and more conservative design.
  3. Hyundai Ioniq 5: Appreciated for its 800V architecture that allows ultra-fast charging.
  4. Renault Scenic E-Tech: The new "Car of the Year in Europe", which comes with an impressive declared autonomy at a competitive price.

Conclusion

Volkswagen's bet on the Tiguan name for the electric segment is a recognition of the value of historic brands. For the Romanian buyer, this means a more familiar transition to electromobility, while maintaining the "solid car" image that has established the brand.
