ADDW system has become mandatory - All new cars sold in Romania now monitor driver attention

All new cars sold in Romania and the EU required to have driver monitoring systems

The automotive market in Romania and throughout the European Union is undergoing a major transformation in road safety. All new cars, trucks and buses sold must be equipped as standard with ADDW (Advanced Driver Distraction Warning) technology, an advanced system designed to monitor driver attention and intervene when the driver is distracted from driving.

The measure marks the entry into force of a new, stricter phase of the European Union's General Safety Regulation (GSR). While the implementation of these systems has been gradual until now, targeting only recently launched models, the new regulation makes the technology mandatory for absolutely every new vehicle leaving dealerships, regardless of its class or price.

How ADDW technology works

The driver distraction warning system should not be confused with classic fatigue detectors, which only analyze steering wheel behavior. ADDW technology uses special sensors and video cameras facing the interior of the passenger compartment to track the driver's eye movements, blink rate and head position in real time.

The algorithm is calibrated to recognize when the driver takes their eyes off the road to use their mobile phone, change navigation settings or interact with rear passengers. If the driver's gaze leaves the windshield for a critical period (usually more than a few seconds, depending on the speed), the system immediately triggers a visual and audible alert on the dashboard to bring the driver's attention back to the traffic.

Impact on the Romanian market

Romania continues to occupy the top spots in European rankings regarding the mortality rate in road accidents, and distraction — especially due to the use of smartphones while driving — is identified by police as one of the main causes of tragedies on the roads.

The mandatory introduction of the ADDW system promises to significantly reduce the number of collisions caused by inattention. For Romanian buyers, this means that even the most affordable new car models will come equipped with technological packages that were previously reserved exclusively for the premium segment. Although increased production costs may generate small adjustments to catalog prices, industry-wide standardization will partially cushion this impact.

The ultimate goal: "Vision Zero"

This regulation is part of the European Commission's long-term strategy, known as "Vision Zero", which aims to reduce deaths and serious injuries on public roads to zero by 2050. Beyond the attention monitoring system, new cars already include other technologies such as lane keeping assistance, automatic emergency braking and accident data recorders (black boxes).

While some drivers may view these systems as intrusive, European statistics clearly show that active assistance technologies save lives. In increasingly congested traffic, the few seconds that ADDW takes to draw attention to the road can make the difference between a safe journey and a fatal impact.
