Toyota Corolla turns 60: Anniversary Active Sport versions launched in Japan

Six decades of supremacy: Toyota celebrates 60 years of Corolla with special "Active Sport" editions

Few names in the automotive industry resonate with the idea of reliability as strongly as the Corolla. Launched in 1966, Toyota's "people's car" has gone through generations, economic crises and radical design changes. Today, at the 60th anniversary, the Japanese giant is not content with a simple reverence, but is launching a series of anniversary editions on the domestic market that transform the model's sober image into a surprisingly dynamic one.

More than a "face-lift": The Active Sport Spirit

The new versions, suggestively titled Corolla Active Sport (sedan) and Corolla Touring Active Sport (station wagon), are the brand's declaration of love for drivers who want the efficiency of a hybrid but don't want to give up the sporty aesthetic.

The visual changes are subtle, but impactful:

  • Sedan: Receives a more refined look through front bumper extensions and side sills painted in body color.
  • Touring version: Adopts an "outdoor" and robust style, using Neutral Black finishes for protective elements, creating a strong visual contrast.
  • Common elements: Both variants ride on 17-inch wheels finished in satin black, offering a much more aggressive stage presence than the standard models.

Interior marked by history

Inside, Toyota has chosen a discreet but premium approach. The most distinctive element is the “60th anniversary” logo, laser-etched with precision into the leather-wrapped dashboard. It’s a detail that reminds passengers that they’re not in an ordinary car, but in a piece of automotive history.

The sports seats come in color combinations specific to each body type: Mid Gray/Black for the sedan, emphasizing elegance, and a mix of Black/Dark Gray for the estate version, focused on utility and durability.

Technical Specifications: The balance between power and efficiency

Under the hood, Toyota relies on its "house recipe" - the 1.8-liter hybrid system. Although we are not talking about track performance, the Japanese engineers have made fine adjustments to honor the "Sport" particle in the name.

Feature Technical Specifications
Engine 1.8-liter Hybrid
Combined Power Output 138 hp
Transmission CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission)
Drivetrain Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) or All-Wheel Drive (E-Four)
Chassis Upgrades Sport suspension and optimized steering (FWD models only)

Front-wheel drive models benefit from revised suspension geometry designed to provide more direct feedback in corners, making the daily commute a more engaging experience.

A surprise for new drivers

In an unexpected move, Toyota has also launched a special version dedicated to driving schools in Japan. This underlines the brand's philosophy: the Corolla remains the first car for millions of people, being the ideal vehicle to learn the secrets of driving thanks to its excellent visibility and intuitive handling.

Prices and Availability

The celebration doesn't stop there. While the Active Sport editions are currently focused on the sedan and estate, Toyota has confirmed that the Corolla Sport (hatchback) and the popular Corolla Cross SUV will receive similar anniversary treatments in the second half of 2026.

In Japan, prices are competitive for their segment:

  • Corolla Active Sport (Sedan): from approx. $20,500
  • Corolla Touring Active Sport: from approx. $20,800

Although these editions are currently dedicated to the Japanese market, fans of the brand in the rest of the world are hoping that the “Active Sport” design elements will soon be found in local dealer offerings. After 60 years, the Corolla proves that it does not need retirement, but only a new, slightly better-tailored suit.
