Massive recall for Ford: Over 110,000 Mustang and Mustang Mach-E models are being recalled for service
Ford has launched two major service recalls targeting two of its most popular models in its current lineup: the Mustang petrol-powered sports car and the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV. In total, the measure affects 110,626 vehicles globally. The two models face completely different technical issues, but both can jeopardize driving safety or the correct operation of the car in critical conditions.
The first campaign targets the current generation Ford Mustang (including the exclusive high-performance Mustang GTD edition), with models produced between 2024 and 2026 affected. In total, 67,842 units are being recalled due to a malfunction in the windshield wiper system. Investigations have shown that, at temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius, the wiper motor loses communication with the steering column module. The malfunction is caused by a factory software error: a circuit board was incorrectly programmed with a setting of 32 kilobytes instead of 16 kilobytes, generating an inappropriate algorithm. As a result, when it freezes, the wipers can only be operated at maximum speed, and the windshield washer system becomes completely inoperative, which severely limits the driver's visibility.
The second recall focuses on the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV and involves a mechanical issue with the rear axle. The manufacturer has identified a major risk of the pinion shaft inside the rear differential breaking while driving. The consequences of this failure are severe: it can lead to a sudden loss of traction while driving or, equally dangerously, to the involuntary movement of the car when stationary, even if the transmission is selected in the “Park” position. Remedying this issue requires the complete replacement of the rear differential at authorized workshops.
What is the impact on homeowners in Romania?
Both models involved in these recall campaigns are part of the official offer of the Ford Romania network, with notable sales volumes on the local market, especially in the case of the electric Mustang Mach-E model.
Although the global share of over 110,000 vehicles mainly targets the large markets of North America and Western Europe, the affected batches also include units delivered to customers in Romania. The standard procedure for the local market involves sending official notifications from the importer to the National Authority for Consumer Protection (ANPC), followed by direct information to the owners via letters or emails, based on the chassis number (VIN).
Romanian owners of Ford Mustang (new generation) and Mustang Mach-E can check for themselves if their vehicle is affected by these campaigns by accessing the section dedicated to recall actions on the official Ford Romania website or by contacting the nearest authorized dealer. All remedial operations – updating or replacing the electronic components for the wipers, respectively the complete replacement of the rear differential – will be carried out free of charge, the costs being fully borne by the manufacturer.
