The new Mercedes-Benz GLC AMG EV SUV will develop over 900 horsepower
The electric GLC AMG: record power for a mid-size SUV
Mercedes-AMG is set to redefine performance in the compact electric SUV segment. The upcoming performance version of the new Mercedes-Benz GLC electric promises staggering figures, delivering a combined output of over 900 horsepower from a revolutionary three-motor configuration.
The electric SUV, which was initially revealed in the fall of this year, is currently available in its base version, the GLC 400 4Matic. This variant already offers respectable performance, using two electric motors for a total output of 490 hp and a top speed of 210 km/h. But the AMG model, expected on the market next year, will take the dynamics to a whole new level.
Three Axial Flux Motor Architecture
The key to this massive power increase lies in the three-motor electric drive system. According to the first details, the future AMG GLC will use axial-flow electric motors, a cutting-edge technology that Mercedes-Benz invested in through the acquisition of British company Yasa.
Axial-flux engines are much more compact and lighter than conventional radial engines, while offering significantly higher power density. This technology allows AMG to integrate an extremely powerful all-wheel drive system:
- An engine will drive the front wheels.
- Two motors will deliver power to the rear wheels.
The resulting total power, of over 900 hp, would place the electric GLC in third place in the top of the most powerful models ever produced by Mercedes, promising a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds and a top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h.
High Performance Batteries and 400 kW Charging
To support such extreme performance, the AMG version will also benefit from an improved battery architecture. The standard prismatic cells will be replaced with cylindrical cells, which offer higher power density and superior thermal resistance.
This technological change will enable a much higher charging power of up to 400 kW, exceeding the capacity of the standard version of the GLC electric by 70 kW. Such a fast charging rate is essential to reduce the time spent at high-power stations, thus increasing the practicality of a performance SUV.
AMG Ambition: Gearbox Simulation
In keeping with AMG’s tradition of delivering an intense and emotional driving experience, the upcoming model will also feature a gearbox simulation system. While electric motors don’t technically require a gearshift, this system promises to add a touch of feedback and sonic engagement, similar to the experience offered by a high-performance combustion engine.
With this launch, expected next year, Mercedes-AMG will not only compete in the luxury electric SUV segment, but will also set a new benchmark for power and technology, demonstrating that electrification can go hand in hand with pure performance.
Electric Future versus Today's Luxury: GLC available for rent
Although the AMG version with over 900 hp shows us the spectacular future of electric performance, the luxury experience of the GLC range is already affordable and popular in today's market.
For those who want to experience the refinement and technology offered by the compact Mercedes-Benz SUV right now, the model is available in car rental fleets. For example, the Ideal rent a car Cluj office has in its end-of-year offer the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe, model year 2024.
This model, with a rental price starting at 94 euros per day, offers a premium driving experience, being equipped with all-wheel drive, automatic transmission and a full range of options. Thus, even if the 900 HP electric monster has not yet hit the roads, the elegance, performance and safety of the GLC class are available to those visiting the Cluj area.
