Sony and Honda definitively abandon electric cars under the Afeela brand

Game Over for Afeela: How the electric dream of giants Sony and Honda died

In a move that sent shockwaves through the tech and automotive industries, the partnership between Sony and Honda has officially pulled the handbrake. The Afeela brand, the promise of a "PlayStation on wheels," is now a museum piece before it has even driven a single kilometer on public roads.

TOKYO – What was supposed to be the start of a new era of mobility has turned into a multi-billion dollar fiasco. Today, March 25, 2026, Sony Honda Mobility (SHM) officially confirmed that it has abandoned development of the Afeela 1 electric sedan and SUV scheduled for 2028. The decision ends one of the most ambitious cross-industry projects of the past decade.

The Domino Effect: When Honda "turns off the power"

The collapse of the Afeela brand is not an isolated event, but the result of a domino effect triggered by Honda earlier this month. The Japanese car giant announced a radical change in strategy, abandoning its own electric range, the "0 Series", due to record losses estimated at $ 15.7 billion.

Because the Afeela was designed to use the technical architecture and software platforms developed for the Honda 0 Series, the cancellation of the latter left the Sony-Honda brand without a technological “backbone.” Without a production-ready chassis and powertrain, the joint venture found itself in an insurmountable impasse.

A "console on wheels" that stays in Standby mode

The Afeela wasn't just a car; it was an entertainment hub. Plans included:

  • PS5 Integration: The ability to play titles like God of War or Gran Turismo directly on the massive in-dash screens via Remote Play.
  • Digital Personalization: Visual dashboard themes inspired by the video game universe.
  • Cutting-edge technology: LiDAR sensors and AI processing powered by Sony's electronics expertise.

All these promises, however, collided with the harsh reality of the market: global demand for premium electric cars has dropped drastically, while pressure from Chinese manufacturers has made the proposed prices for the Afeela suddenly seem unjustified.

The bill of failure and unfulfilled promises

For customers in the United States who were expecting the first deliveries later this year, the news is bittersweet. SHM has announced that it will fully refund the advances paid for the two planned versions:

Model Trim Estimated Starting Price Status
Afeela 1 Origin $89,900 Cancelled
Afeela 1 Signature $102,900 Cancelled

The future is in question

Although the Sony Honda Mobility joint venture still exists “on paper,” its role is now uncertain. While Honda retreats toward hybridization to limit its financial losses (its first annual net loss since 1957), Sony is left with top-notch automotive software but no car to install it in.

It's a brutal reminder that in today's automotive industry, it's not enough to have the best technology or the most famous gaming brand; you need a solid infrastructure and a market ready to pay the price of innovation.
