Mercedes-Benz presents VLE: The electric successor to the V-Class promises a range of 700 km

Mercedes-Benz VLE: Goodbye, V-Class! The 700 km electric limousine that wants to send private jets into retirement

Mercedes-Benz has just hit the reset button on everything we knew about luxury group transportation. At a global event marking a new milestone in the brand's 140-year history, the Stuttgart-based automaker unveiled the new Mercedes-Benz VLE.

Stop calling it a “van.” This is the official, all-electric successor to the popular V-Class, but the level of refinement has been pushed so high that the term “Multi-Purpose Vehicle” (MPV) suddenly seems outdated. Mercedes prefers the name “Grand Limousine,” and after you read the spec sheet, it’s hard to argue with them.

A silhouette that "cuts" the air (and prejudices)

The first major change is the design. While the old V-Class was essentially a well-finished cubic shape, the new VLE adopts an aggressive aerodynamic philosophy. With a drag coefficient of just 0.25 Cd, the VLE is as “slick” as many sports sedans, which is crucial for electric range.

The front is dominated by a reinterpreted grille, available with an integrated central star or a statuary star on the hood, framed by a complex digital light signature. The rear, with arc-shaped taillights that wrap around the spoiler, gives it a futuristic presence on the road.

"The Ballet of Chairs" and Versatility Taken to the Extreme

The interior is where the VLE humiliates its rivals. Mercedes introduces the concept of “Seat Ballet”. Thanks to the new MB.OS operating system, the electrically adjustable seats can be reconfigured remotely via the app or the central unit. Want to transform the car into a mobile office or a VIP lounge while you drive to it? A simple press of a button starts the “choreography” of the seats.

The 10 reasons why VLE changes the rules of the game:

  1. Autonomy of over 700 km (WLTP): The figure that eliminates any "range anxiety".
  2. 800V Technology: A 15-minute coffee break gives you 355 km of range.
  3. MBUX Superscreen: Three gigantic screens covering the entire dashboard, including a display dedicated to the front passenger.
  4. Cinema on wheels: In the back, a 31.3-inch panoramic screen with 8K resolution descends from the ceiling.
  5. Grand Comfort Seats: Massage, individual wireless charging, extra cushions and calf support.
  6. "Roll & Go" system: Manual seats have integrated wheels; you can take them out of the car and roll them straight into the garage, effortlessly.
  7. Rear-axle steering: With a steering angle of 7 degrees, the VLE turns in a similar space to a CLA model.
  8. AIRMATIC suspension: "Magic carpet" comfort, with intelligent ground clearance control based on Google Maps data.
  9. Artificial Intelligence (AI): The virtual assistant uses ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Bing for natural conversations.
  10. Sky View Roof: A huge panoramic roof that amplifies the feeling of freedom and space.

Limousine performance, not a utility vehicle

The VLE is not at all sluggish. The top version, the VLE 400 4MATIC, develops 305 kW (approx. 415 hp) and sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.4 seconds. For maximum efficiency, the drive unit on the rear axle can be automatically disconnected (Disconnect Unit - DCU) when all-wheel drive is not required, saving valuable energy.

“The new VLE marks the beginning of a new era. It combines the versatility of an MPV with the ride comfort of a sedan and an immersive digital experience. It is unlike any other eight-seater vehicle in the world.” — Thomas Klein, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans.

Verdict: A mobile office or a family retreat?

The Mercedes-Benz VLE seems to be the perfect “shapeshifter.” It can be an exclusive VIP shuttle, a family car for transcontinental vacations, or a mobile office equipped with 5G and 8K video conferencing.

With a 115 kWh battery and a software architecture (MB.OS) that will receive over-the-air updates for years to come, the VLE is not just a replacement for the V-Class, but a technological leap that puts pressure on the entire automotive industry.
