End of the road for AC Schnitzer: The tuner specializing in BMW models ceases operations

Farewell, Aachen! End of an era: Famous tuner AC Schnitzer draws the curtain after almost four decades

In a move that has shocked the global car enthusiast community, Kohl Group has announced that legendary tuning house AC Schnitzer will cease its production and modification operations by the end of 2026. The decision marks the demise of one of the most important pillars of German automotive culture, leaving behind a 39-year legacy defined by speed, precision and an umbilical connection to the BMW brand.

From glorious victories in the DTM championship alongside the iconic BMW M3 E30, to radical projects like the “Tension” (based on the M6 E63) that shattered speed records on the Nardo circuit, AC Schnitzer was more than just an aftermarket shop. It was, for many, the gold standard of Bavarian aftermarket refinement.

A "perfect storm" of financial and bureaucratic causes

The decision to close was not driven by a lack of creativity, but by a growing economic reality. Rainer Vogel, the company's chief executive, explained with sharp honesty the reasons behind this "stop the game."

  • German bureaucracy: One of the biggest obstacles was the extremely slow approval process in Germany. Vogel pointed out that AC Schnitzer ended up launching components on the market 8 or 9 months later than international competitors. “That speaks for itself,” he said, pointing out that in a fast-paced market, such a delay is fatal.
  • Generational change: Perhaps the most bitter admission was the one related to the public. “We haven’t been able to inspire the younger generation as much as we did with their fathers,” Vogel admitted. In an era of electrification and cars increasingly seen as mere mobility gadgets, the passion for deep mechanical modifications seems to have entered a shadow cone.
  • Costs and tariffs: Rising raw material prices, import tariffs in key markets (such as the US), and exchange rate volatility have made maintaining profitability an impossible mission for Kohl Group.

What happens to the current owners?

The good news for current customers is that AC Schnitzer will not disappear “overnight.” The company confirmed that:

  1. Current projects will be completed by the end of this year.
  2. The existing stock of rims, suspensions and aerodynamic kits will be sold during 2026.
  3. Warranties and after-sales support will be honored by Kohl Group even after the tuning activity has ceased, thus providing security to those who have invested in their packages.

Will the name survive?

Unlike rivals Alpina, which have been officially absorbed into the BMW group to become a luxury sub-brand, the future of the AC Schnitzer name is still uncertain. There are talks of selling the rights to the brand to other investors, meaning the logo could appear on other products in the future, but the “spirit of Aachen” — the pure engineering that transforms a production BMW into a track beast — will most likely stop there.

Historical note: Founded in 1987 by Willi Kohl and Herbert Schnitzer, the company began its journey with the ACS7 (based on the E32 7 Series). Since then, every generation of BMW has received the Schnitzer treatment, becoming a constant presence at the Essen Motor Show and on the wish lists of "Bimmer" fans.

The closure of AC Schnitzer is more than a corporate bankruptcy; it is a clear signal that the traditional tuning industry, based on internal combustion engines and exhaust sound, is approaching the finish line.
