BMW iX3 crowned 2026 World Car of the Year and Electric Car of the Year

BMW iX3 “Neue Klasse”: The Electric King of the World in 2026

New York, April 1, 2026 – In an automotive industry that is recalibrating at the speed of light, BMW has achieved what many considered an impossible mission: to dethrone Korean supremacy and bring the ultimate title back to Munich. The new BMW iX3, the first model based on the revolutionary Neue Klasse architecture, has been officially crowned the 2026 World Car of the Year at the New York Auto Show.

But it didn't stop there. The Bavarian SUV achieved a historic "double", also winning the 2026 World Electric Car of the Year trophy, confirming that BMW's bet on cylindrical cells and 800V architecture was the winning one.

Why did the iX3 win? The technology behind the crown

The jury, made up of 98 automotive journalists from 33 countries, was convinced by the massive technological leap compared to the previous generation. While the old iX3 was an electric compromise built on a thermal platform, the new model is a digital "native".

  • Neue Klasse Architecture: This allows for much more efficient battery integration and record interior space for its size.
  • Range and Charging: The iX3 50 xDrive version promises a range of up to 805 km (WLTP), a figure that eliminates any trace of “range anxiety.” Thanks to the 400 kW DC charging system, you can add over 300 km of range in just 10 minutes.
  • Performance: With a 469 hp all-wheel drive system, the iX3 reaches 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds.

BMW iX3 in Romania: Prices and Availability

Romania remains an extremely important market for the premium segment, and BMW has consistently dominated sales in this area. Interest in the new iX3 is already huge, with local dealers reporting dozens of firm orders since the pre-launch period.

How much does the new iX3 cost?

Although prices may vary depending on features, the starting list for our market looks like this:

Version Power Starting Price (Estimated)
BMW iX3 40 (RWD) 315 HP ~ €58,000
BMW iX3 50 xDrive 469 HP ~ €65,460
BMW iX3 M Sport Pro 469 HP ~ €72.340

Prices include VAT and do not take into account any subsidies through the Rabla Plus program, which in 2026 underwent significant changes compared to previous years.

Competition: A "Star Wars" on the asphalt

The BMW iX3 is not alone in this crowded segment. In the WCOTY finals, it defeated the legendary (and now much more modern) Nissan Leaf and the giant Hyundai Palisade. However, the real battles are fought in the showrooms with:

  1. Audi Q6 e-tron: The platform sibling of the Porsche Macan, which relies on an ultra-technological interior.
  2. Tesla Model Y: The "best-seller" that still dictates the rules in terms of software and charging network.
  3. Porsche Macan Electric: For those who want pure sportiness, albeit at a significantly higher price.
  4. Lucid Gravity: Although it won the title of Luxury Car of the Year, the Gravity is starting to "bite" from the premium SUV segment thanks to its record-breaking range.

The other award winners of the gala

The New York gala also revealed other automotive gems:

  • Mazda 6e: Confirmed that Japanese design remains unbeatable, winning Car Design of the Year.
  • Firefly: The Chinese brand struck with the title of Urban Car of the Year, a sign that small Asian electric vehicles are becoming the standard in metropolises.
  • Hyundai Ioniq 6 N: It went home with the title of Performance Car, a sweet consolation after losing the ultimate title to the Bavarians.

Did you know? This is only the second time BMW has won the grand prize in the 21-year history of the competition. The first success was in 2006, with the famous 3 Series (E90). It took an electric revolution for Munich to return to the top step of the world podium.

The success of the new iX3 symbolically marks the end of the era of "adaptation" and the beginning of an era in which BMW not only participates in the electric revolution, but leads it.

Do you think the new Neue Klasse design language will resonate as well with the Romanian public as the old prominent "grids"?
