BMW Alpina Unveils Vision: The First Luxury Concept of the Brands New Era

Rebirth of a legend: Vision BMW Alpina redefines ultimate luxury and speed at Villa d'Este

Four years after the official takeover of tuning brand Alpina by the BMW Group, car enthusiasts around the world finally received the answer to a burning question: what will the future of this legendary brand look like under the wing of the Bavarian giant? The answer was officially revealed at the prestigious Concours d'Elegance at Villa d'Este, where the manufacturer presented the Vision BMW Alpina – the first concept of the company's new era – for the world premiere.

This imposing luxury coupé, based on the platform of the current 7 Series sedan, is not just a design exercise, but a firm statement of intent: Alpina steps into an era of absolute opulence, without forgetting its sporting roots.

Between BMW and Rolls-Royce: A new niche of absolute luxury

With the full integration into the BMW Group structure, the role of the Buchloe brand has been clearly defined. The new entity is no longer just a performance workshop, but an ultra-exclusive brand strategically positioned in the market.

Oliver Viellechner, head of BMW Alpina, explains this vision:

“BMW Alpina fills a gap in our portfolio between BMW and Rolls-Royce, as we see even more potential in the high-end segment. With Alpina we have a strong heritage and a global community that we want to build on, while maintaining the essence of what the brand stands for – speed, comfort and refinement.”

Exterior design: “The Shape of Speed” and subtle elegance

With a substantial length of 5,200 mm, the Vision BMW Alpina impresses with a massive presence: it is wide, low and extremely confident. The plunging coupé roofline instantly suggests dynamism, but the generous dimensions ensure that the car can accommodate four adults in complete comfort.

Under the long hood pulses a V8 engine, specially tuned to deliver the deep, sonorous acoustic notes characteristic of Alpina exhausts.

Maximilian Missoni, head of design for BMW's mid-size and luxury cars, as well as BMW Alpina, has relied on a philosophy called "Second Read." Spectacular details don't clamor for attention, but gradually reveal themselves to the attentive viewer:

  • "Shark Nose" front end: The classic BMW kidney grille is reinterpreted as a bold three-dimensional sculpture, flanked by slim headlights that incorporate illuminated crystals reminiscent of the first light of morning over the Bavarian Alps.
  • 6-degree speed line: A unique visual axis starts from the lower corners of the front bumper, subtly rises at a 6-degree angle along the body and ends at the rear of the car, emphasizing the feeling of movement even when the vehicle is stationary.
  • Modernized deco-lines: The exterior decorative lines, an Alpina symbol since 1974, are now applied extremely discreetly, being painted directly onto the bodywork, under the clear coat.
  • Iconic wheels: The car rides on massive 22-inch rims at the front and 23-inch rims at the rear, retaining the classic 20-spoke design introduced in 1971.

Architectural clarity and high-watchmaking details in the cabin

The concept's interior is a sanctuary of premium materials and discreetly integrated technology. The cabin uses genuine leather sourced exclusively from the Alpine region, combined with stitching in the brand's historic colors: heritage blue and green.

The interior design takes the 6-degree angle from the exterior, dividing the dashboard into a dark upper area and a light lower area. The center console hides details worthy of a luxury yacht or private club: behind it, an automatic mechanism delicately lifts engraved crystal glasses and a dedicated water bottle, held by hidden magnets.

The latest technology is represented by the BMW Panoramic iDrive display, which spans the entire width of the dashboard. The digital graphics were created especially for Alpina, and the background reproduces an accurate image of the Alpine mountain range, as seen looking south from Buchloe, where the brand's story began.

Founder's philosophy: "A comfortable driver is a faster driver"

In 1965, Burkard Bovensiepen founded Alpina in Buchloe, refusing to follow his family's career in typewriter manufacturing to dedicate himself to performance tuning. His vision was unique: speed and comfort are not mutually exclusive, but complement each other. In endurance racing, while rivals were eliminating every gram to reduce the weight of the car, Bovensiepen added extra padding to the driver's seat. He knew that a tired driver is a slower driver.

This philosophy survives in the Vision BMW Alpina through the famous Comfort+ calibration, a driving mode that goes beyond BMW's standard comfort settings, offering an extremely refined suspension.

Historically, the new concept is the spiritual successor to the legendary Alpina B7 Coupé from the late 1970s (based on the BMW E24 6 Series). That model with its long hood and aggressive profile showed the world that a car could carry four people across intercontinental distances at breathtaking speeds without sacrificing a single second of refinement.

Today, Vision BMW Alpina is writing the next chapter of this exclusive story, demonstrating that, under BMW management, the pure spirit of sophisticated performance from Buchloe is more alive than ever.
