Audi reveals the first official image of the A2 e-tron, the brands smallest electric model

Audi officially confirms the return of the A2 name: First images of the new electric hatchback

After two decades of absence, Audi is shaking off one of the most avant-garde names in its history. The Ingolstadt-based brand has released the first official teaser image of the new A2 e-tron, confirming that the upcoming “baby Audi” will be a fully electric model, designed to redefine premium affordability.

In a world of massive SUVs, Audi is taking an unexpected step back to its compact roots, but with an eye firmly on the future. At its annual press conference recently, the German automaker revealed the silhouette of the upcoming Audi A2 e-tron, officially marking the return of the name after a 21-year hiatus (the original was produced between 1999 and 2005).

A familiar yet electrifying silhouette

The image, published as a design sketch, reveals a “one-box” philosophy, with an arched roofline and a plunging rear, details that directly refer to the aerodynamic design of the first A2. Although previously captured prototypes in testing were strategically camouflaged, the new model promises to retain the practical spirit of its predecessor, offering generous interior space compared to its compact exterior dimensions.

The new A2 e-tron is not just an exercise in nostalgia; it has a critical strategic mission. With the A1 and Q2 models being phased out of the portfolio by the end of this year, the A2 e-tron will officially become the gateway to the electric universe of the brand with the four rings.

Technical details: What do we know so far?

Although Audi has kept its official figures under wraps, industry sources and data provided at the conference allow us to outline the technical profile of the new hatchback:

  • Platform: It is based on the Volkswagen Group's MEB architecture (sharing DNA with models like the VW ID.3 or the Cupra Born), but optimized for Audi's premium standards.
  • Autonomy: Thanks to the extremely aerodynamic shape, it is estimated that the top versions could achieve a range of up to 600 km (WLTP) with a battery of around 79 kWh.
  • Performance: Rear-wheel drive configurations are expected, as well as a possible quattro variant (with two motors), offering power ranging from 170 HP to over 300 HP.
  • Local production: Audi has confirmed that the model will be assembled “at home” at its main plant in Ingolstadt, thus securing the future of jobs in the region in the era of electric mobility.

“The A2 e-tron is our promise to offer electric mobility that impresses in everyday life – efficient, compact and confident,” said Gernot Döllner, CEO of Audi.

Price and availability

The official launch (world premiere) will take place this fall, most likely at the Munich Motor Show. First deliveries are scheduled for early 2027. As for the price, analysts estimate a starting price of around 35,000 – 40,000 euros, positioning it as a direct rival for the new Tesla Model 2 and future luxury electric compacts.

With this model, Audi is not only rejuvenating its range, but also trying to recapture the innovative spirit of the original aluminum model, transforming it into a symbol of modern efficiency.
