Audi celebrates 50 years of five-cylinder engines with exclusive RS 3 Competition Limited edition
Ode to the “Glorious 5”: Audi RS 3 Competition Limited – A 750-piece tribute to a half-century legend
Ingolstadt is marking 50 years since the debut of its first five-cylinder engine with an edition that is not just about aesthetics. The Audi RS 3 Competition Limited is a mechanical love letter, a "purist" model that brings the rally sound directly into the heart of the cabin.
In 1976, Audi launched the first five-cylinder petrol engine in its history in the Audi 100 (C2). What began as a technical solution to provide six-cylinder performance in the space of four quickly developed into an automotive religion, cemented in rallying by the legendary Walter Röhrl and the Group B monster, the Sport quattro. Today, five decades later, the brand with the four rings celebrates this legacy with the most visceral version of the current RS 3: the Competition Limited.
Engineering for the Senses: More Sound, Less Insulation
Although the raw numbers remain the same – 400 hp and 500 Nm extracted from the famous 2.5-liter TFSI block – the on-board experience is radically transformed. In an era of increasingly quiet cars, Audi has made an unexpected gesture for a premium manufacturer: it has eliminated 4 kilograms of sound-absorbing material between the engine and the passenger compartment.
The result? A direct dialogue between the driver and the 1-2-4-5-3 firing order. The jerky, baritone sound, typical of the odd-numbered cylinder, is further amplified by the recalibrated RS Sport Exhaust system, whose flaps are programmed to open much earlier in dynamic modes, providing an acoustic spectacle worthy of the brand's sporting heritage.
Technical premiere: Factory coilover suspension
For the first time in the model's history, the RS 3 gets a coilover suspension (adjustable in height and stiffness) specially developed in collaboration with the Audi Sport division. It's not just a stiffer setting, but a complex system with dampers adjustable in three directions (low-speed compression, high-speed and rebound).
The car leaves the assembly line with a 10 mm lower ground clearance, but offers the owner complete freedom. Audi includes a dedicated tool kit and a manual with recommended settings for different circuits in the delivery package, turning each of the 750 units into a precision instrument for track-day enthusiasts. The dynamics are complemented by a stiffer tubular rear stabilizer and, optionally, Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires for surgical grip.
Design: Malachite Green and Gold "Neodymium"
Visually, the edition is a delight for connoisseurs. The centerpiece of the color palette is the shade Malachite Green, a direct homage to the Audi Sport quattro from 1983. Matt carbon details abound, from the split front splitter to the massive air diffuser.
A technological "easter egg" will delight fans: with each lock or unlock, the Matrix LED lights not only "dance", but visually reproduce the ignition sequence of the pistons (1-2-4-5-3). The interior continues the theme of exclusivity, with carbon bucket seats and inserts in the shade Neodymium Gold, while the digital instrument cluster takes on a white background, a nostalgic reference to the iconic Audi RS2 Avant from 1994.
Exclusivity and price
Audi decided to produce only 750 units worldwide, with the distribution being clearly divided: 585 units for fans of the Sportback body style and 165 for those who prefer the Sedan silhouette.
But exclusivity comes at a price. With deliveries scheduled to begin in the summer of 2026, the RS 3 Competition Limited will start at €108,365 (Sportback) and €110,005 (Sedan). That's a steep price for a compact model, but for collectors, this is probably the last chance to acquire a piece of pure mechanical history before electrification puts an end to the five-cylinder era.
Verdict: The Audi RS 3 Competition Limited isn't just a faster car; it's a raw sensory experience that proves that, 50 years after its debut, the heart of the Audi brand still beats in five strokes.
