Stellantis recalls over 400.000 cars. What Romanian drivers who own a Jeep Grand Cherokee need to know

Global safety alert: Stellantis recalls over 419.000 Jeep SUVs due to airbag defect. What's happening in Romania?

The Stellantis automotive group is facing a major new safety challenge. The company has officially announced the start of a massive recall campaign targeting 419,035 vehicles due to a critical software error. This defect can delay the deployment of side airbags in the event of a collision, significantly increasing the risk of injury to passengers.

A software error endangers passenger safety

The problem was identified and reported by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). According to official documents, the fault is not mechanical in nature, but comes from the car's source code.

The calibration error in the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) module, supplied by Robert Bosch, causes a temporary failure of the door pressure sensors to be interpreted as permanent. In the event of a side impact (T-bone) accident, this bug blocks or delays the deployment of the side curtain airbags by a few crucial milliseconds.

Due to this defect, the cars no longer comply with the US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS 214) regarding side impact protection.

Models affected by the recall:

  • Jeep Grand Cherokee – models manufactured between 2022 and 2026
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee L (extended version with 3 rows of seats) – models manufactured between 2023 and 2025

The Romanian and European Market: Are There Reasons for Concern?

For Jeep vehicle owners in Romania and the rest of Europe, the situation must be viewed from two perspectives: official sales channels and the market for imported used vehicles (the gray market).

1. Cars officially purchased from dealerships in Romania

At European level, homologation standards differ from those in the US. The current recall campaign was launched strictly under the jurisdiction of NHTSA for models intended for the North American market. To date, the European Union Rapid Alert System (Safety Gate / RAPEX) and the Romanian Auto Registry (RAR) have not issued an official general recall alert for this specific airbag software defect in models configured for Europe.

2. Increased attention to cars imported from the USA (Grey Market)

Romania has an active market for used cars imported from the United States, especially damaged and subsequently repaired vehicles. If you own a current generation Jeep Grand Cherokee, manufactured between 2022 and 2026 and imported from the US, your vehicle is directly affected by this recall.

Vehicle Specification Airbag Recall Status What should you do?
Purchased from an official EU dealership (European Spec) Currently unaffected officially Monitor notifications from your local importer or national automotive authority.
Imported used from the US (US Spec / Gray Market) Directly affected Check your 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the official NHTSA recall portal.

Broader context: Other recent problems for Stellantis in Europe

Although this airbag alert is currently focused in the US, the Stellantis group is simultaneously managing other large-scale recall campaigns on the European continent, including in Romania:

  • Fire risk in hybrid models: Stellantis has initiated a global recall of approximately 700,000 electrified vehicles (Plug-in Hybrid) manufactured between 2023 and 2026 (including Jeep, Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, Alfa Romeo models). The issue concerns a risk of short circuit due to a pipe placed too close to electrical components.
  • PHEV battery issues: The Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe models have previously been under scrutiny due to defective cells in the high-voltage battery, which could cause overheating.

How to fix the airbag problem and what should drivers do?

The good news is that fixing the problem is extremely simple. Since it is a programming error, there is no need to physically replace the airbags or dismantle the passenger compartment.

Authorized dealers will perform a free software update for the ORC module. The intervention only takes a few tens of minutes.

If you suspect your vehicle is affected, you can enter the 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the official NHTSA recall platform or the official Mopar/Jeep support website to schedule a free service visit. Additionally, drivers are warned that if the airbag warning light remains on continuously when starting or if a repeated beep is heard, the vehicle should be taken in for an urgent computer check.
