Leapmotor A05 becomes B03 in Europe: The Chinese launch a direct rival for Renault 5 and VW ID.Polo
Chinese manufacturer Leapmotor, backed by automotive giant Stellantis, has officially unveiled its new A05 model on the Chinese market. Conceived as a zero-emission electric vehicle dedicated to urban environments, the subcompact (B-segment) model will cross the ocean next year and will be marketed on the European market under the name Leapmotor B03. The newcomer enters into direct competition with models such as the Renault 5 E-Tech and the upcoming Volkswagen ID.Polo (ID.2).
Compact exterior dimensions and optimized space
Designed for urban congestion, but without sacrificing interior space, the Leapmotor A05 / B03 displays solid proportions for its class:
- Length: 4.175 mm
- Width: 1,790 mm
- Height: 1,560 mm
- Wheelbase: 2,605 mm
With a length almost 18 cm longer than that of a Renault 5, the Chinese model relies on a generous wheelbase in relation to the exterior dimensions, ensuring ample legroom for rear passengers. Aesthetically, the car adopts the brand's modern language, with a closed front grille, semi-hidden handles and a distinctive LED light signature at both ends.
Technical specifications: Two battery options and up to 510 km of range
Under the hood, the Leapmotor A05 uses a single electric motor configuration mounted on the front axle. Buyers in China have two power levels and two LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery capacities available:
- Engines: 94 HP (70 kW) or 121 HP (90 kW);
- Base battery (40 kWh / 39.8 kWh to be exact): provides a theoretical range of up to 405 km in the Chinese CLTC cycle;
- Extended battery (53 kWh): increases range up to 510 km CLTC.
For the European market, the B03 variant will most likely be homologated under the strict WLTP cycle. In this configuration, the 53 kWh battery version is estimated to offer a real-world range of around 370 – 400 kilometers, making it suitable for both daily commuting and longer trips outside the city.
Digitized Interior: Snapdragon Processor and Advanced Modularity
Inside, the model impresses with its high-class technological equipment. The centerpiece of the dashboard is the 14.6-inch multimedia touchscreen, complemented by an 8.88-inch digital instrument panel.
The system is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 processor, a high-performance chip typically found in higher-end cars. The interior features ergonomic “7-layer Cloud-Feel” seats, over 33 storage spaces and a modular trunk with a base volume of 474 liters (expandable to 1,308 liters by folding the rear seats).
Production, Stellantis network and estimates for Romania
Thanks to the strategic partnership in which Stellantis holds a significant stake in Leapmotor, the marketing of the B03 model in Europe will be facilitated by the official distribution and service network of the Euro-American group. Also, to avoid the increased customs duties applied to electric cars imported from China, part of the assembly of the B03 model could be carried out directly in the European plants of the Stellantis group.
Availability in Romania:
- European orders open: By mid-next year.
- First deliveries on the local market: Second half of next year, through the network of authorized dealers.
Estimated selling prices:
- Base model (40 kWh battery / 94 HP): from approximately 20,000 – 21,500 EURO (list price, without subsidies).
- Large battery model (53 kWh / 121 HP): from approximately 23,000 – 24,500 EURO (list price, without subsidies).
By applying the national Rabla Plus program, the effective purchase price of the new Leapmotor B03 in Romania could drop to between 15,000 and 16,500 EURO, positioning it as one of the most affordable and well-equipped electric hatchbacks on the market.
