Mercedes-Benz announces a new generation of batteries with increased autonomy and lower costs for future electric cars

New Mercedes-Benz batteries, 1.205 km range, LNMO technology and plans for electric cars

The transition to zero-emission mobility is entering a new stage of maturation, in which the main focus is no longer just on massively increasing battery capacity, but on optimizing cell chemistry, reducing production costs and exponentially increasing efficiency. The Mercedes-Benz Group has officially announced that it is working intensively on a new generation of batteries, promising significantly superior performance for its future electric models, complemented by the spectacular advance in the direction of solid-state batteries.

New generation of LNMO cells: Up to 30% more autonomy and compact design

To meet the demands of the current automotive market, the Stuttgart-based manufacturer is reconfiguring its energy architecture by introducing innovative chemical solutions.

  • New LNMO Chemistry: The brand’s future electric models will feature batteries that combine lithium manganese oxide (LMO) with nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC), resulting in an advanced LNMO structure. This configuration relies on a much higher proportion of manganese while reducing reliance on expensive metals.
  • Direct advantages over LFP technology: Compared to conventional lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cells, the new generation of batteries developed by Mercedes-Benz can offer up to 30% more driving range, while maintaining much more compact dimensions and reduced weight, without compromising the dynamic performance of the vehicle in any way.

Sustainability and reduced costs: Elimination of cobalt and optimization of raw materials

In addition to purely technical performance, German engineers placed particular emphasis on the economic and ecological side of the production process.

  • Elimination of cobalt: The new cells have as their main objective the complete elimination of cobalt from the composition, a critical material from an ethical and supply chain point of view.
  • Nickel reduction: The proportion of nickel is also significantly reduced compared to the classic NMC cells currently used. By reducing the consumption of expensive and critical raw materials, Mercedes-Benz aims to substantially reduce production costs, which will lead to more affordable final prices for customers who want an electric car from the brand.

The Frontier of Solid State: The 1.205-Kilometer Marathon Without Recharging

Looking to the distant technological horizon, the German manufacturer is not stopping at optimizing liquid chemistry, but is investing heavily in the technology of the future: solid-state batteries.

  • Strategic partnerships: These revolutionary batteries are developed in close collaboration with leading companies in the field, such as Factorial Energy and ProLogium.
  • Extreme endurance test: The viability of this technology has already been demonstrated in real-world conditions on a heavily modified version of the electric EQS. The experimentally equipped vehicle managed to cover an impressive distance of 1,205 kilometers without stopping to recharge, from Stuttgart (Germany) to Malmo (Sweden). This performance highlights the enormous potential of the new energy technologies that the German manufacturer is preparing for the future of the automotive industry.
