New Freelander 8: The first model of the new JLR brand is bigger than a Defender and fully electric

Freelander returns: The legend becomes a standalone brand. All about the new electric "colossus" Freelander 8

After an absence of over a decade, the name that defined the compact SUV segment in the 1990s is making a comeback in a completely unexpected form. The JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) Group, in partnership with Chinese giant Chery, has transformed the Freelander from a simple model into a global brand dedicated to premium electric vehicles.

The first representative of this new era is the Freelander 8, a massive SUV that promises to combine British adventurous spirit with cutting-edge Asian technology.

Design: A tribute to the past, in a "Giant" format

Despite its familiar name, the Freelander 8 is no longer the “little brother” of the family. With a length exceeding 5.1 meters and a wheelbase of over 3 meters, the new model is noticeably larger than a Land Rover Defender 110, offering an imposing presence on the road.

  • Exterior lines: The design is robust and minimalist. The most striking visual element is the sloping D-pillar, a direct reference to the first generation Freelander from 1997.
  • Light signature: The LED “pixel” headlights are discreetly integrated, while the front grille is completely closed, betraying its electric nature.
  • Off-road Capabilities: Although it is a "tech-SUV", the hard plastic protections on the wings and sills suggest that the Freelander has not forgotten its off-road genes.

800V Technology and iMAX Architecture

Underneath the imposing bodywork is the iMAX platform, developed specifically for this brand. This is not just a base for electric vehicles (BEV), but a modular one, capable of hosting PHEV (plug-in hybrid) and Range Extender (heat engine as generator) systems.

Key Technical Specifications:

Feature Freelander 8 Details
Electrical Architecture 800 Volts (Ultra-fast charging)
Charging Power Up to 350 kW (10-80% in approx. 15 minutes)
Terrain System i-ATS (Intelligent All-Terrain System)
Interior Configuration 6 seats (2+2+2) with "Zero-Gravity" seating
Tech Processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 Chip

An absolute novelty is the roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, which, together with a suite of high-resolution cameras, will enable an advanced level of autonomous driving, adapted to both dense urban traffic and undeveloped roads.

The Interior: A "Cinema" on Wheels

Although JLR has kept the interior a mystery in the first images, company sources talk about the largest integrated Mini LED screen in the segment, which stretches across the entire width of the dashboard. The emphasis is on the comfort of rear passengers, where the right-hand seat (second row) benefits from a “zero-gravity” mode for total relaxation during long journeys.

How much will it cost and when will it arrive in Romania?

The Freelander 8 will initially be produced in China at the Changshu plant, but officials have confirmed that the model will be a global one. The Freelander brand is strategically positioned as a “Premium Technology” brand, located below Land Rover’s extreme luxury range (Range Rover), which means that the price will be competitive for its segment.

Price estimate for the Romanian market. Taking into account the prices of direct rivals (such as the Kia EV9 or Volvo EX90) and the JLR-Chery positioning strategy, here are our estimates:

  1. Freelander 8 (Base version - RWD): Approximately €62,000 – €68,000 (including VAT).
  2. Freelander 8 (High-Performance AWD Version): Can go up to €85,000 – €90,000.

Prices could be slightly reduced through the Rabla Plus program (if it is still active at the time of commercial launch in 2027), making the Freelander 8 an extremely attractive alternative for families who want a large electric SUV, but with a true British pedigree.

Conclusion

The official launch in Europe is expected towards the end of 2026, with the first deliveries in Romania estimated for the first half of 2027.

Do you think turning a legendary name like Freelander into an all-electric brand is a brave move or a loss of identity for classic fans?
