The largest recall campaign in recent years: The technical cause of the problem and the estimate of the financial impact
Volkswagen Group is preparing for a global recall campaign targeting around 4 million vehicles, the largest preventive remedial action in the German carmaker's recent history since the emissions scandal.
The technical reason for this measure concerns a problem with the steering system. Investigation of the components has shown that a bolt securing the steering box to the subframe may be exposed to increased corrosion over time. In extreme cases, advanced oxidation can lead to the bolt breaking, a process that risks causing the steering box housing to crack and, implicitly, making it difficult or impossible to control the steering, especially at low speeds.
The campaign is strictly preventive in nature. To date, no accidents, injuries or material damage caused by this defect have been recorded, the service intervention being designed to eliminate any safety risk before wear and tear becomes apparent in daily operation.
Targeted brands and models: How the service intervention will be carried out
The recall decision applies to the entire concern, affecting models produced between 2013 and 2024 under the Volkswagen, Audi, Škoda and SEAT brands.
Among the models targeted by this preventive campaign are:
- Volkswagen: Golf, Tiguan, Atlas;
- Audi: Q3 and other compact models built on the group's common platforms;
- Škoda and SEAT: Various compact and SUV models that use similar steering subassemblies.
From an operational point of view, fixing the fault is a simple technical procedure. During the service visit, technicians will replace the bolt susceptible to corrosion with a new part, made of a superior alloy, with increased resistance to environmental factors and anti-skid materials used in winter. The operation takes approximately one hour per vehicle and will be carried out completely free of charge for owners.
Estimating financial costs for the Volkswagen Group
Treating 4 million vehicles across its global dealer network is a substantial logistical and financial effort for the German concern. While the replacement of the part itself is not complex, the scale at which the campaign is being implemented generates significant costs.
| Cost Category | Estimated Average Cost per Vehicle | Estimated Total Cost (for 4 million vehicles) |
| Hardware components and spare parts (anti-corrosion treated bolt) | €15 – €30 | €60 – €120 million |
| Service labor (~1 hour of labor in authorized network) | €50 – €100 | €200 – €400 million |
| Administrative management & owner notification | €10 – €20 | €40 – €80 million |
| ESTIMATED TOTAL | €75 – €150 | €300 – €600 million |
Budget impact and operational context
A direct cost of between 300 and 600 million euros represents a considerable financial burden. Although this amount is incomparably smaller than the tens of billions of euros generated by the emissions scandal of the past, the timing of this recall is extremely delicate for the Volkswagen Group.
The company is in the process of implementing drastic measures to reduce fixed costs and restructure its European operations. The addition of an unforeseen expense of up to half a billion euros for warranties and recalls will put additional pressure on the group's operating margin and will require a reallocation of financial resources from maintenance and quality budgets.
