Revolution on board Volvo: Google Gemini turns the car into an intelligent dialogue partner

In a move that reaffirms the Swedish brand’s status as a leader in software innovation, Volvo Cars has begun the global rollout of the Google Assistant Gemini, transforming the cabin into a space for authentic conversation.

From voice assistant to travel partner
Unlike older generation assistants, Gemini doesn't just execute tasks, it understands intent. If you tell the car, "Hey Google, find a place along the route where I can get some good croissants," and then follow up with, "Does it have good reviews?" or "Is parking easy there?", the system keeps the conversation going without forcing you to pick up the context.
The partnership between Google and Volvo, which will be strengthened in 2025, has seen the Swedish manufacturer chosen as the lead development partner for new AI features. The result? A deep integration that covers:
- Trip planning: Gemini can suggest routes based on complex preferences, not just the shortest path.
- Message Management: Summarizes long conversations on WhatsApp or SMS and allows for natural, fluidly dictated replies.
- Media control: You can request music based on your mood ("Play something relaxing for the ride home"), and the AI will select the ideal playlist from streaming services.
Who gets the update?
Volvo hasn't forgotten its "traditional" customers. The update is being delivered Over-The-Air (OTA) and is available for approximately 2.5 million vehicles globally. It affects all models with integrated Google operating system manufactured from 2020, including:
- SUVs: XC40, XC60, XC90, EX30, EX40, EX60, EX90.
- Sedans and estate cars: S60, S90, V60, V90 (including Cross Country variants).
When does Gemini arrive in Romania?
The launch officially began on April 30, 2026 in the United States. According to Volvo's official strategy, expansion to "other international markets" will be gradual in the coming weeks.
The verdict for Romania: Although no fixed day has been announced for the local market, we can expect the first update notifications to appear on car screens in Romania during May and June 2026.
The update is free, but requires an active internet connection (via the car's SIM card or hotspot) and, preferably, the use of a Google account set to a supported language (English being the first available, followed by regional localizations).
The machine that "rejuvenates" through software
This move is part of a larger plan that began in March 2026 with the launch of the new Volvo Car UX interface. The Swedes are demonstrating that a car bought 5 years ago doesn't have to be technologically outdated, but can become smarter as time goes by.
