Toyota bZ4X 2026: new batteries, longer range and improved performance
The new generation Toyota bZ4X promises 573 km of autonomy and power up to 338 hp
Toyota has announced a major update to its first electric SUV, the bZ4X, making it a much more competitive proposition in the ever-evolving market for zero-emission vehicles. The new specifications bring major improvements to performance, efficiency and features, signaling the Japanese automaker’s intention to keep the model at the top of its list of choices.
This refresh, described by Toyota as "much more than a mid-life refresh," comes about three years after the initial launch, directly addressing market feedback, particularly around range and charging speed.
More Powerful Engines and New, Larger Batteries
The core of this update is the new propulsion units and battery packs, now supplied by the Prime Planet Energy & Solutions (PPES) partnership, replacing the previous batteries.
- Front-wheel drive (FWD): It gets a 57.7 kWh battery (gross), offering a range of 444 km (WLTP). The engine develops 167 hp.
- Extended Range (FWD Long Range): Uses a 73.1 kWh (gross) battery for a range of 569 km (WLTP). Power increased to 224 hp.
- All-Wheel Drive (AWD): Also uses the 73.1 kWh battery, providing a range of up to 516 km (WLTP). With an impressive power of 343 hp, this version becomes the most powerful Toyota electric car on the market.
The electric motors have been redesigned to be lighter and more compact, with a notable increase in power to both axles. The AWD version also benefits from an increased towing capacity of 1500 kg.
Ultra-Fast Charging and Optimized Thermal Systems
One of the most anticipated innovations concerns battery thermal management. The new bZ4X includes:
- Water-Based Cooling System: A new thermal system that optimizes battery performance.
- Battery Pre-conditioning and Warming: Essential functions that ensure a constant DC charging rate, even in cold conditions.
- DC charging (10% - 80%): Takes just 28 minutes at a fast charging station.
- 22 kW Onboard AC Charger: Becomes standard equipment on the High trim line, significantly shortening charging time at home or at public AC stations.
Revised Design and Digitized Interior
In addition to technical improvements, the bZ4X receives a number of visual and interior adjustments that enhance its appeal:
- Exterior: Slim LED headlights are now joined by a new central light for a distinctive light signature. The lower grille and bumper are revised, and the wing protectors are painted in gloss black. Aerodynamics have been improved, reaching a coefficient of 0.27 Cd (versus 0.29 Cd). The 18- and 20-inch wheels have received new designs.
- Cabin: The interior is now more digital and ergonomic. The central screen is enlarged to 14 inches (versus 12.3 inches). The central tunnel has been lowered, creating a "digital island" with the transmission selector and two induction charging surfaces. The USB ports for rear passengers have an increased power to 60W, ensuring faster charging of devices.
- Solar Roof: The top-of-the-range High trim optionally offers a solar roof that captures energy to support battery charging.
The Relevance of the New Toyota bZ4X for the Romanian Market
The bZ4X update is crucial for the Romanian market, where the electric SUV segment is booming and competition is fierce. The improvements to autonomy and charging speed directly address the biggest fears of Romanian drivers: “fear of autonomy” and the still-developing charging infrastructure.
Estimated Price and Availability
Although official prices for the new updated model (with the new battery and engine specifications, most likely called the MY25 model year or similar) are not yet officially published, we can make an estimate based on the current model and the level of improvements.
Availability:
- According to the global announcement, the new updated version will be introduced to the market starting in December (this year).
- For the Romanian market, we can expect the first units with the new specifications to be available for order and delivery early next year (quarter I/2026).
Estimated Price (without Rabla Plus subsidy):
The current Toyota bZ4X model (previous specifications) was sold in Romania with list prices, VAT included, starting at approximately €42,800 (for the basic FWD Dynamic version) and going up to €56,200 (for the AWD Luxury Long Range version).
Given the significant improvements (more powerful engines, larger batteries, 22 kW AC charger standard on higher trim levels), we can expect a slight upward adjustment in prices, reflecting the added value.
| Version (Estimated) | Trim Level (New) | Battery Capacity (kWh) | Estimated List Price (VAT Included) |
| FWD | Mid | 57.7 | Starting from ~€43,500 |
| FWD Long Range | High | 73.1 | Between ~€50,000 and ~€53,000 |
| AWD Long Range | High | 73.1 | Between ~€54,000 and ~€58,000 |
These prices are estimates. The final price will be influenced by the exchange rate, import duties and the importer's pricing strategy, but the most important factor remains the possibility of applying the Rabla Plus subsidy, which can reduce the final purchase price by up to €11,500 (depending on the amount approved for next year).
The updated Toyota bZ4X represents a major leap forward, coming with a powerful combination of increased range, faster charging and superior power, while maintaining Toyota's reputation for reliability.
