The new Peugeot 408 2026: More aggressive design and fully electrified engines
New Peugeot 408 2026: The Metamorphosis of the “Lion” into a More Aggressive and Fully Electrified SUV Coupe
Peugeot continues to rewrite the rules of automotive design, and the new Peugeot 408 facelift (2026) is clear proof that the French are not afraid to innovate. Officially presented at the Brussels Motor Show, the new model updates its unconventional fastback/SUV coupe silhouette, bringing a series of aesthetic refinements, cutting-edge technology and a clear electrification strategy.
Exterior design: The “fangs” become sharper
The most obvious transformation is found at the face level. Peugeot designers have completely redesigned the optical blocks, the main LED headlights are now considerably thinner and positioned lower, giving the car a much more “frowning” and dynamic appearance. The visual identity is now dominated by the famous signature of the three lion “fangs”, integrated into a continuous LED strip that accentuates the width of the vehicle.
The front grille has also received special attention: sculpted using 3D printing technology, it features illuminated elements at the top and integrates the new Peugeot logo, which discreetly hides the sensors of the assistance systems.
New styling elements:
- Flare Green: A spectacular exterior shade that changes its reflections from a bright yellow in full sun to a deep green in the shade.
- Illuminated lettering: For the first time, the “Peugeot” name on the tailgate is illuminated, giving it a futuristic touch at night.
- Aerodynamic wheels: New 19 and 20-inch models, optimized to reduce rolling resistance and increase the range of the electrified versions.
Interior: Tactile luxury and 3D technology
Inside, Peugeot has raised the bar in terms of material quality. The interior of the new 408 facelift now boasts Alcantara, Nappa leather and genuine aluminum inserts. The i-Cockpit concept has been refined: the 10-inch central screen is more driver-oriented and more ergonomically positioned to minimize distraction.
The top versions (GT and GT Exclusive) come equipped with the 3D digital instrument cluster, which displays information on two levels of depth, prioritizing critical alerts. In addition, the climate control system has been equipped with “Clean Cabin” technology, an advanced air quality monitoring system that filters pollutants and fine particles.
Three hearts under the hood: From Mild-Hybrid to Full Electric
The Peugeot 408 facelift 2026 eliminates the classic purely thermal engines, proposing a fully electrified range:
- Mild-Hybrid (145 HP): A 1.2-liter turbo engine assisted by a 48V system, ideal for those looking for urban efficiency without the need to charge at a socket.
- Plug-in Hybrid (240 HP): The top of the range in terms of combined performance. This version receives a larger 14.6 kWh battery and an e-DCS7 automatic transmission, offering a purely electric range of up to 85 kilometers – enough for most daily commutes.
- e-408 (Full Electric): The 100% electric version develops 213 HP and promises a range of approximately 456 km (WLTP) thanks to the 58.2 kWh battery. Although it is not the fastest charging in the segment, it can go from 20% to 80% in about 30 minutes at 120 kW stations.
The main rivals that the new 408 faces in Romania
The Peugeot 408 facelift 2026 enters an extremely competitive Romanian market, where the segment of coupe SUVs and C-class crossovers has exploded in recent years. The French model is not only struggling with design, but also with the increasingly high hybrid efficiency of its competitors.
1. Renault Arkana – The direct “home” rival
The Arkana is the closest competitor in philosophy and price. Although it is based on a B-segment platform (Captur), its dimensions place it directly in the sights of the 408.
- Advantages: More affordable starting price (often under €30,000 in promotions) and a full-hybrid system (E-Tech) that is very efficient in urban environments.
- Weaknesses: The interior is less futuristic than Peugeot’s i-Cockpit, and space for rear passengers is slightly more limited due to the plunging roof.
2. Cupra Formentor – The Sporty Alternative
For those who choose the Peugeot 408 for its aggressive design, the Formentor is the Spanish alternative that emphasizes performance.
- Pros: Superior driving dynamics, all-wheel drive available on top versions and a “bad boy” look that attracts attention.
- Cons: A smaller trunk (450 liters vs. 536 liters on the 408) and an interior based on the VAG group’s touch interface, which has been criticized for its ergonomics.
3. Toyota C-HR (New Generation) – The King of Efficiency
Recently launched in a new iteration, the C-HR relies on the same “concept car” aspect that Peugeot also has, but with 5th generation hybrid technology.
- Pros: Legendary reliability, extremely low consumption in the city and a very good resale value on the Romanian market.
- Weaknesses: Reduced rear visibility and a feeling of claustrophobia for rear passengers due to the very small windows.
4. Citroën C5 X – Comfort-oriented “cousin”
Although sharing the same Stellantis platform (EMP2), the C5 X is oriented towards a “magic carpet” driving experience.
- Advantages: Much softer suspension (Advanced Comfort), limousine-like interior space and a design that combines the station wagon with the SUV.
- Weaknesses: Larger dimensions (4.8 meters), which makes it more difficult to park in the crowded cities of Romania.
A surprise for 2026 on the local market is also the Dacia Bigster, which, although not a pure SUV coupe, attracts C-class SUV customers with a much lower price and modern hybrid technologies.
Conclusions and availability
The new Peugeot 408 2026 manages to remain one of the most beautiful and exotic appearances on European roads. Although official prices for Romania have not yet been confirmed, it is estimated that the facelift model will start from approximately 36,000 - 38,000 euros for the mild-hybrid version, reaching over 50,000 euros for the top electric version.
With this facelift, Peugeot has not only "beautified" an already attractive model, but has transformed it into a mature product, capable of fighting on equal terms with rivals in the premium segment.
