Tesla Semi is coming to Europe - what are the chances of Romanian carriers adopting the new electric tractor-head?
The American electric vehicle manufacturer has taken a major step forward by officially launching its electric Semi truck on the European market. The launch event took place at the Hannover International Motor Show (IAA Transportation), the leading trade fair for commercial vehicles and the transport sector. On this occasion, full technical details for the European specification of the new tractor unit were revealed.
The model driven by Elon Musk promises a range of up to 550 kilometers on a single charge, under maximum load conditions, on the Old Continent. The officially declared consumption is extremely low compared to the vehicle's dimensions, being approximately 100 kWh per 100 kilometers (or 1 kWh per kilometer).
In terms of performance, the Tesla Semi has 3 electric motors that together develop a total power of 1,088 horsepower. The European version has a curb weight of 9.1 tons, while the maximum authorized total mass of the assembly reaches 40 tons. In terms of energy supply, the system allows fast charging with a power of up to 800 kW, which makes it possible to recover 60% of the battery capacity in just 30 minutes. The first Tesla Semis intended for European customers will be delivered starting in 2027.
Technical architecture and integration into the European infrastructure
The European specification of the Tesla Semi has received adaptations aimed at optimizing roadholding and efficiency on continental routes. The truck uses a multi-axle drive configuration: one axle is specially calibrated for high torque and acceleration at low speeds under heavy load, while the second axle is designed to maintain a constant cruising speed on the highway with minimal energy consumption. In addition, the hydraulic steering box has been replaced with an advanced servo-electric system, which provides additional maneuverability and native integration with assistance and autonomous driving systems.
The 800 kW charging capacity fits perfectly into the European legal framework on working and rest times for long-distance drivers. The regulations require a mandatory 45-minute break after every 4.5 hours of driving. A half-hour stop at a high-power charging point allows the accumulation of energy for another 300–350 kilometers of travel, minimizing downtime in the logistics chain.
Price and availability for transport companies in Romania
For fleet operators and transport companies in Romania — an extremely competitive field at the European level —, the introduction of Tesla Semi represents an attractive option for fleet decarbonization, but also a budgetary and operational challenge.
The American manufacturer has not yet announced an official list price for the European market. However, given North American prices (where similar variants range between $260,000 and $290,000), market estimates place the cost of a Tesla Semi in Europe in the range of €250,000 to €300,000. Although the initial investment is significantly higher than for an equivalent diesel truck, the fuel savings and reduced long-term maintenance costs are the central commercial arguments for large hauliers.
Regarding availability for Romanian companies, orders can be placed through the official European network, but actual deliveries will start in 2027. The biggest challenge for local adoption remains infrastructure. In Romania, there is currently no network of Megacharger (MCS) charging stations for heavy transport vehicles. Thus, in the first phase, Romanian companies that will purchase this model will most likely be those operating on international Western European routes (transiting the TEN-T corridors where ultra-fast networks are being built) or those that can invest in their own high-capacity charging stations installed at warehouses and logistics hubs.
