Mercedes-Benz GLS 2027: The "S-Class of SUVs" gets a second spectacular facelift and AI technology
Mercedes-Benz has lifted the curtain on the new GLS 2027, giving its flagship SUV a profound update. With an illuminated exterior design, a “Superscreen”-dominated interior and refined powertrains, the new model aims to redefine absolute luxury on and off-road.
In a rare strategic move, Mercedes-Benz has decided to give the current generation GLS (X167) a second major facelift, rather than launching a completely new generation. The decision underlines the brand’s commitment to perfecting its internal combustion engines while also giving them a massive dose of cutting-edge digital technology. Produced at the Tuscaloosa, Alabama, plant, the new 2027 GLS promises to be the smartest and most comfortable SUV in the brand’s history.
Exterior design: Visual identity defined by light
The most obvious change is at the front. The new GLS adopts a much more generous radiator grille, which is now illuminated on the contour, providing an imposing presence at night. Customers can choose between the standard design, with classic horizontal elements, and the AMG Line variant, which integrates the central Mercedes-Benz emblem in a more aggressive style.
An absolute novelty for this segment is the option of an illuminated Mercedes-Benz logo on the bonnet, a detail taken from the S-Class saloon. Lighting technology takes a giant leap forward with the new LED Digital Light headlights, which offer 40% more brightness and halve energy consumption. The Ultra Range function allows the road to be illuminated over a distance of up to 600 metres.
At the rear, the taillights receive new graphics, with a three-dimensional star motif, joined by a gloss black panel that mirrors the front design. The color palette has been enriched with Dark Petrol and Manufaktur Patagonia Red, complemented by new 21- and 22-inch wheels.
The interior of the future: MBUX Superscreen and Artificial Intelligence
If the exterior is impressive, the interior of the new GLS 2027 is a true technological showcase. The star of the cabin is the MBUX Superscreen system, which transforms the dashboard into a continuous surface of screens. It includes:
- A 12.3-inch digital instrument panel;
- A massive central multimedia screen;
- A dedicated 12.3-inch screen for the front passenger.
The system runs the new MB.OS operating system, which uses artificial intelligence developed in partnership with Microsoft to learn the driver's preferences. From automatic temperature adjustment to augmented reality navigation suggestions, the car becomes a proactive personal assistant.
Comfort remains at its highest levels for the 7 passengers. The rectangular air vents have been replaced with more elegant round ones, and the seats benefit from 3D graphics and extensive electric adjustments. The Rear Comfort Plus package transforms the second row into an executive area, with 11.6-inch tablets and massage functions.
Performance: A revolutionary V8 and Mild-Hybrid efficiency
Under the hood, the Mercedes-Benz GLS 2027 brings significant improvements to the entire engine range, all of which are assisted by a 48V mild-hybrid system (ISG 2.0) that adds an extra 200 Nm when needed.
- GLS 580 4Matic: The top of the range gets a new 4.0-liter V8 engine with flat-plane crank, a technology borrowed from the world of sports cars for better efficiency and quicker response. It now develops 537 hp and 750 Nm of torque.
- GLS 450 4Matic: The inline 6-cylinder petrol engine offers 12% improved torque, ensuring a smoother ride.
- Diesel (350d and 450d): The two diesel versions have been optimized for the upcoming Euro 7 regulations, integrating electrically heated catalytic converters for the first time to reduce emissions immediately after starting.
"Cloud" suspension and autonomous parking
The new GLS is not only powerful, but also extremely agile for its size (5.2 meters long). The Airmatic air suspension and E-Active Body Control system are now connected to the cloud, receiving real-time information about the road condition to adjust the damping before the car hits the bumps.
In terms of safety, the sensor package is impressive: 10 cameras, 5 radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors. The new MB.Drive Parking Assist system can now park the vehicle even in places where asphalt markings are missing, using only the surrounding visual landmarks.
Availability and price: When will the "giant" arrive in Romania?
Although the world premiere took place recently, Romanian brand enthusiasts will not have to wait long to configure their own copy. According to the official launch calendar, the new Mercedes-Benz GLS facelift 2027 is expected to be available for orders in local dealerships starting in the last quarter of 2026, with first deliveries expected for the first part of 2027.
As for the financial side, cutting-edge luxury comes with a corresponding cost. Although the official price list for the domestic market may undergo adjustments until the commercial launch, estimates based on the current model and new standard features (such as the Superscreen system and Digital Light headlights) indicate the following thresholds:
- GLS 350 d 4Matic: The entry-level version will start at approximately EUR 111,000 – 115,000 (including VAT).
- GLS 580 4Matic: For the top of the range with a V8 engine, the base price will exceed the threshold of EUR 135,000, and can quickly reach over EUR 160,000 with optional equipment.
- Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600: The exponent of absolute luxury will have a starting price that will be around EUR 210,000.
Why choose the new model?
The new GLS is not just a simple aesthetic update; it is a vehicle that brings AI technology and limousine comfort in a format capable of off-road adventures. For customers in Romania, where the luxury SUV segment is on the rise, the GLS facelift 2027 positions itself as a technological leader, offering as standard equipment that was previously only available on the expensive optional list.
Note for future buyers: Mercedes-Benz Romania already offers the possibility to register your interest on the official website to receive immediate notifications when the ordering system (online configurator) opens.
